Job Description:
bp operates at the heart of the global energy system, helping countries meet their energy needs and serving millions of customers every day. With world-class assets, technology, trading capability and partnerships, we deliver energy at scale today while investing with discipline in the energy transition.
Fast-moving. High impact. Full of possibility. In supply, trading & shipping (ST&S), every decision matters – and you’ll be making them sooner than you think.
Why work in ST&S at bp?
Hear more from some of our apprentices:
1) Things you didn't know about ST&S
3) Top tips
5) What skills are needed in ST&S
Your apprenticeship will be aligned to one of the following standards (learning providers are subject to change):
Business administrator / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education
BPP (Level 3)
Data analyst / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education
Imperial College and Corndel (Level 4)
During the assessment process we will assess where your skill set will be best suited – to join either the business track or the operations track. Either way, we expect you to become the future talent for our ST&S business.
General business track:
Roles could see you supporting various commercial trading activity in the financial team; analysing market data; or working in the shipping team, to name a few. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will have the opportunity to move onto our wider ST&S development programme, a further 3 years, specialising in either Trading, Analytics or Commercial tracks, depending on your skillset and career aspirations. This is subject to successfully completing additional assessments.
Trading operations track:
Operations is key to the success of our trading teams. Over the 2-year programme you may operate physical oil movements ensuring safe, compliant, commercial operations. You will be given the opportunity to work across different teams on the trading floor, from crude oil to biofuels, from barges to ships, and everything in between.
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to complete a 3rd rotation focusing on a core operations role with a view to becoming a permanent member of the operations team.
Join us and you’ll get the support of a structured technical pathway and our training programme, designed to help you grow both professionally and personally. In return, you'll bring your ideas, curiosity and ambition to real business challenges. Along the way, you'll be part of a supportive bp early careers community that will help you grow, succeed and make a meaningful impact from day one.
We believe in hiring people with the right core competencies and motivation, rather than specific technical experience. That’s why, when it comes to our apprenticeship programmes, we welcome applicants from a range of academic subject backgrounds.
Most importantly, we’re looking for people who have a real passion to add value in a global business.
To be successful in this role you don’t need to have everything figured out from day one, but you do need to be willing to learn, take on new challenges and keep going when things don’t go to plan. You’ll enjoy working with others, while also being able to take ownership of your own work. Being organised, paying attention to detail and communicating clearly will also help you succeed.
To apply, you must be aged 18 or over by the start of the programme in September 2027.
If you’re currently studying A-levels or completing further education, you must be due to complete your qualification/s in 2027 (we’re unable to progress applications for students who will be part way through their studies when the programme starts).
As this is an apprenticeship, there are some eligibility requirements you’ll need to meet:
