Given training, general guidance, direction and supervision, performs a variety of technical procedures related to routine and special Histocompatibility activities at a level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. ls responsible to learn and carry out procedures in all the functional areas of the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory (TIL) and is responsible for accuracy and thoroughness of completion. Assumes "on-call" responsibilities and remains available for emergency and long duration specimen processing as necessary.
Qualifications:
- B.S. Degree in Medical Technology; OR M.T. (ASCP) certification with a Clinical Laboratory Technologist License from the NYS Dept. of Education.
or
- B.S. Degree in Biology or Chemistry or equivalent in order to meet the minimum New York State Dept of Ed. requirements for a 12 month Limited Permit for full-time supervised laboratory training in a NYSDOH permitted General Histocompatibility Laboratory under the direction of the Laboratory Director with a NYSDOH Certificate of Qualification to obtain a Clinical Laboratory Technologist Restricted License in Histocompatibility Testing.
- Must possess the desire and capability to work independently without direct supervision at times.
- After training, must be available and qualified to assume "on-call" duties and function independently as determined to be adequate by the Supervisor of the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory.
- Must possess adequate maturity and judgment and demonstrate ability to accept responsibility as determined to be adequate by the Supervisor of the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory.
- Maintains continuing education as required by the NYS Dept. of Health and ASHI and maintains MT(ASCP) if applicable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AFTER COMPLETION OF TRAINING:
- Performs all HLA typing procedures.
- Performs all HLA antibody screening, antibody identification, and crossmatching procedures. Identifies the antibodies in patient's blood that could react adversely and cause harm to the person receiving a transplant.
- Performs all HLA procedures which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility.
- Responsible for technical quality of work performed including accuracy, documentation, and thoroughness of procedures completed.
- Performs special HLA procedures as directed.
- Demonstrates competence by performing external and internal proficiency testing.
- Maintains adequate records of all procedures performed, records workload and other statistics, records all results of tests conducted in the laboratory, writes reports neatly, accurately and clearly.
- Practices appropriate personnel, fire, safety, infection control, and hazardous chemical policies and implements them accordingly.
- Responsible for the procurement, storage and routing of supplies as directed; recommends the procurement of new supplies.
- Responsible for the orderliness and cleanliness of the TIL and is responsible for the cleanliness of technical and scientific equipment which is not maintained by the Environmental Services or Clinical Engineering Departments.
- Responsible for training newly assigned Technicians/Technologists and providing information regarding job performance and policies and procedures of the Lab and of the College.
- Responsible for the training and supervision of any Clinical Laboratory Science students while assigned to the Lab. Recommends to the Supervisor additional training relating to student activities while assigned to the TIL.
- Participates in formal teaching programs, conferences and in-service educational programs as required.
- Keeps abreast of new procedures, methods and equipment and participates in their evaluation and applications within the Lab's activities.
- Assumes "on-call" assignments as scheduled. Responsible for keeping the TIL Supervisor and Center for Donation and Transplant (CDT) Administrator On Call informed of availability and non-availability on an immediate basis.
- Assists with on-going research and developmental activities relevant to histocompatibility and transplantation as directed.
- Contacts/consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal and when difficulties are encountered in testing.
- Performs all quality control procedures and maintains adequate records within the laboratory and documents problems and remedial action as appropriate.
- Receives blood specimens sent to the laboratory, observing principles of asepsis to prevent loss or contamination of specimens.
- Prepares solutions, media and reagents used in the laboratory.
- Assists supervisory personnel in maintaining supplies.
- Maintains knowledge of all hospital, local, state and federal regulations and technical standards. Ensures that all are followed within the Department.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by the laboratory. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the laboratory's policies and procedures.
- Participates in the monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement of quality within the laboratory.
- Maintains and demonstrates competency in all assigned duties of Clinical Laboratory Technologist I with On-Call Duties.
