Cabot Carbon Ltd, are looking for a Control and Instrumentation Engineer to join the Engineering team based in Barry, South Wales.
About the Position
The Control and Instrumentation Engineer acts as the site subject matter expert and owner for all onsite OT and IT systems, ensuring procedural, legal & regulatory compliance. They must also ensure that the systems and equipment are safe to operate at all times, and maintained at optimum performance to meet the business objectives of the site.
The role must also support to the local IT equipment users and be the interface between the site and shared service center. Collaborates with site and Corp staff to develop and implement projects, budgets and contracts and monitor system and service performance.
The candidate must therefore have strong self-motivation, and a desire to work in an environment of continuous improvement. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a collaborative mindset are key for this role, which will interact with multiple organisational levels and functions, both regionally and on-site.
How You Will Make an Impact:
• Promote safety as the number one priority. Provide leadership to encourage a safety first environment at all times, and take actions which demonstrate continuous improvement with respect to health, safety including process safety and the environment. Ensure compliance with UK legislative and site SH&E requirements
• Using industry best-practice tools, support Root-Cause-Analysis (RCA) activities into plant performance deviations. Lead and support teams throughout the entire process
• Use Management Of Change (MOC) techniques to ensure that potential plant/process changes receive appropriate review and are managed through to final handover to site
• Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and lead point of contact for site IT, OT systems and infrastructure – performing regular scheduled maintenance, diagnosing systems issues, and implementing corrective actions or fixes to software and hardware as required
• Implement programming changes to the DCS/PLC systems as required, utilizing management of change procedures, and ensuring appropriate commissioning checks before/after changes to live plant equipment
• Ensure site compliance with applicable legal, corporate and local standards. Own and manage relevant site standards including alarm management, functional safety, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIL), Overrides, IEC61511, Cybersecurity
• Provide Leadership and support for the implementation and on-going management of site functional safety systems (DCS trip architecture, SIL, Interlocks)
• Own and manage the site IT/OT infrastructure (E.g. DCS I/O, controllers, gateways, servers, data-historian, CCTV, and data backup control). Work with local and regional teams to develop
• Support the Engineering Manager in control and setting of the site budgets for IT Software, IT Hardware, and DCS/PLC maintenance activities. Provide appropriate management of expenditure whilst ensuring all key preventive and corrective tasks are completed to schedule.
• Support the Engineering and Production Managers to manage the site knowledge-base on IT/OT operations. Support the management and close-out any training needs within the teams for applicable DCS/PLC operation and site maintenance activities.
• Support and participate in the development of IT strategies, policies, standards and systems while ensuring compliance with Global IT Standards and Work Practices
• Provide a link between shared-service-centre and the site to ensure efficient tracking and closure of IT related issues
• Provide a link between global teams and Barry site, ensuring alignment on key strategies, projects and standards for IT and OT systems
• Provide project management and support for the site Capital Projects portfolio. Acting as owner and SME for changes which apply to the site IT/OT functions
• Raise work orders and Purchase orders as necessary
• Take responsibility for any other reasonable duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
• Advanced knowledge of DCS, PLC & Data Historian hardware, infrastructure, and software. Including design, commissioning, programming, maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Understanding of DeltaV Virtualised systems - HyperV and Vmware, including failover and replication
• Understanding of ladder logic and ability to perform first line maintenance on PLC systems.
• Ability to interrogate relevant data stored in site systems to aid trouble shooting
• Applied knowledge of Cybersecurity protocols and management systems
• Excellent critical reasoning skills and experience using problem solving techniques (e.g. Kepner-Tregoe, Six Sigma, 5-Why tools)
Advanced knowledge of office IT hardware, software and networks
What You Will Bring to Cabot:
• BSc Degree – Chemical Engineering, Process Control Systems or Instrumentation & Electronics.
• Experienced in Emerson DeltaV DCS system software and hardware architecture
• Experienced in variety of PLC architecture, such as Siemens, SCADA, Allen-Bradley
• Certified in functional safery 61511/61508 – Safety instrumented systems (SIS) for the Process Industry Sector
• Experience in a process industry operating advanced control, supervisory and data management systems.
• Detailed knowledge of manufacturing control and reporting systems and instrumentation, Microsoft Windows operating system, office applications and security concepts.
• A demonstrable track record as a user/programmer of distributed process control systems
• Demonstrated business awareness and familiar with cost/benefit analysis based decision-making.
• Safety - Knowledgeable of Safety tools such as risk assessment
• Experience working on an operating chemical manufacturing facility desirable
• Fluent in English language
