Dave is a financial app on a mission to build products that level the financial playing field. It is redefining the financial landscape by leveraging technology to create an affordable, transparent, and user-centric access to liquidity for millions of Americans. As a leading innovator in the U.S. financial services sector, Dave’s digital financial platform offers products designed to meet the credit needs of those underserved by traditional financial institutions. Dave’s offerings include its flagship ExtraCash product, providing members up to $500 within minutes. The company is on track to launch several new product offerings in 2026, including a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) option.
Dave is focused on serving Americans who are financially vulnerable or living paycheck to paycheck. Dave is leading the charge in creating a new era of credit products that prioritizes speed, affordability, and accessibility, making it the go-to financial partner for those who need it most.
We’re looking for a Senior Director, Assistant General Counsel, Product & Regulatory to lead legal strategy across Dave’s consumer financial products and regulatory landscape. You’ll be a senior advisor to Product, Risk, Compliance, and executive leadership while developing a strong team that helps Dave build responsibly and move with confidence.
The Opportunity
This role sits at the intersection of product innovation, consumer financial regulation, and business strategy. You’ll shape how Dave approaches legal risk across banking, lending, payments, subscriptions, and emerging products while helping teams translate complex requirements into practical decisions.
You’ll lead a team of senior legal professionals, set the strategy for product and regulatory counseling, and serve as a trusted advisor on Dave’s most complex product, bank partner, licensing, and regulatory matters.
What You’ll Build and Own
Lead legal strategy for Dave’s banking, lending, payments, neobanking, and subscription products, partnering with Product, Design, Marketing, Engineering, Security, Risk, and Compliance from early concept through launch and ongoing operations.
Advise on product structure, onboarding, disclosures, pricing, servicing, and terms, helping teams balance member experience, business objectives, and legal and regulatory requirements.
Build and lead a proactive regulatory monitoring and change-management program covering federal and state legislative, regulatory, licensing, and enforcement developments.
Own senior legal relationships with sponsor banks, program partners, payment processors, and outside counsel, including BaaS arrangements, audits, program changes, and card-network requirements.
Oversee Dave’s state licensing strategy, including NMLS-related requirements, and provide legal leadership during regulatory exams, bank partner reviews, and audits.
Manage, coach, and develop senior legal professionals, setting clear expectations for quality, judgment, ownership, and professional growth while planning for future capability and succession needs.
The Impact
Your work will influence how Dave designs and scales products used by millions of members. By connecting regulatory requirements with practical business decisions, you’ll help Dave continue building accessible financial products while strengthening the systems that support responsible growth.
What We’re Looking For
J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
12+ years of legal and regulatory experience in consumer financial services and/or fintech, including significant experience advising on product and regulatory matters.
Deep experience with banking, lending, payments, digital financial products, and BaaS partnership structures.
Strong knowledge of consumer financial services laws and regulations, including TILA, TISA, EFTA, FCRA, GLBA, UDAAP, ROSCA, and related state consumer protection and licensing requirements.
Demonstrated experience managing state licensing requirements and building or maintaining state regulatory requirements inventories.
Experience supporting state and federal regulatory exams, audits, and regulatory change initiatives.
Proven people leadership experience, including developing senior attorneys or comparable legal professionals and building strong, accountable teams.
Executive-level communication skills and the ability to make complex legal and regulatory issues clear to senior leaders and, when needed, the Board.
Bonus Points
Experience in fintech, digital banking, payments, or financial services technology.
Experience across both law firm and senior in-house roles.
Experience building or scaling an in-house legal function.
Recognized subject-matter expertise in consumer fintech product or regulatory matters.
What Makes Someone Successful Here
You bring strong judgment and understand that great legal counsel goes beyond identifying risk. You connect the dots across product, regulation, member experience, operations, and business strategy, and you help teams make thoughtful trade-offs. You’re comfortable owning ambiguous, high-impact matters and shaping a path forward when precedent is limited.
You also get results through others. You set clear expectations, give useful feedback, develop talent, and create systems that help the team operate consistently at a high level. You collaborate early, build trust across functions, and adjust as new information changes the picture without losing sight of long-term outcomes.
What to Expect
You’ll have meaningful autonomy and a broad mandate. The regulatory environment and product roadmap will continue to evolve, so not every answer will be defined in advance—you’ll help shape the approach.
This is a highly collaborative role with regular exposure to senior leadership and cross-functional teams. The goal is practical, durable legal guidance that helps Dave make better decisions and build responsibly.
