Corporate Counsel

About us

Working at Transurban is different; it’s a place where you can see the benefits of your work play out in real life, every day. We create city-sized solutions—building and operating safer, smarter, and more sustainable roads—to solve pressing transport challenges that are slowing cities down.

About the role

We are seeking a proactive and commercially minded Corporate Counsel – Customer & Technology to join our high-performing Customer & Technology Legal team. Reporting directly to the Head of Legal – Customer & Technology, you will be a trusted partner to our Customer and Technology business units. In this role, you will provide high-quality, practical legal advice that balances legal compliance and risk mitigation with commercial objectives, helping us deliver seamless, reliable experiences for millions of motorists across Australia.

Day-to-day, you will:

• Deliver expert legal advice across Australian Consumer Law, privacy, data governance, AI, cyber security, intellectual property and corporate and roadside technology matters.
• Draft and negotiate complex commercial contracts, including customer service agreements, software licensing and customer and technology related vendor contracts.
• Support customer-facing initiatives, reviewing marketing and trade promotion materials, customer communications, toll products and fees, customer loyalty/rewards programs and debt collection frameworks.
• Advise on business development opportunities, actively contributing to customer and technology related bids, tenders and new commercial opportunities.
• Manage legal, compliance, and regulatory risk, evaluating proposed legislative changes and implementing practical strategies to protect Transurban’s interests and reputation.
• Partner cross-functionally with our Customer and Technology teams, embedding yourself within key initiatives to proactively address issues and drive commercial alignment.
• Direct external legal partners, managing specialist external counsel efficiently to support complex matters and achieve commercial objectives cost-effectively.

About you

This role will suit someone with a curious mind, strong legal technical capability, and transferable commercial skills and experiences, including:

• Admission as a solicitor in Australia with a current practising certificate.
• 3 to 6 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) within a reputable corporate law firm and/or in-house legal team.
• Proven commercial contracting expertise, with demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts, software licensing, privacy, consumer law, or data governance matters.
• Exposure to technology frontiers, with knowledge or strong practical interest in AI, cyber security, and customer rewards/loyalty programs.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with exceptional communication abilities and the confidence to translate complex legal concepts into clear, business-friendly guidance.
• A proactive, solutions-driven mindset, with the ability to anticipate legal risks, manage competing priorities independently, and thrive as part of an energetic, collaborative team.

If you meet some of these requirements, but not all, we encourage you to submit your application.

With a career at Transurban, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

• A range of flexible working and leave options, including the option to purchase an additional six weeks of leave each year
• 16 weeks paid parental leave (regardless of gender or carer status), with no waiting period, with Superannuation paid during unpaid leave as well
• Learning and development opportunities to support your career interests
• Health and wellbeing support—access to Headspace and our EAP program, wellness facilities, and more
• Share offers and insurance benefits
• Social activities, community give-back programs and paid volunteer days

We offer a range of flexible working and leave options, so you can balance your work and life commitments and interests. Have a conversation with us about how this could work for you.

We embrace diversity with a foundation of safety, wellbeing and inclusion; where everyone belongs. We treat everyone with fairness, consideration and respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, marital or family status, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, cultural or socio-economic background, perspective, and experience – whether they work for us or not. We want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe to express ideas, questions and concerns.
