We’re seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop and maintain robust software for mission‑critical gas analysis products using modern embedded software practices, contemporary development tooling, agile delivery methods and responsible use of AI-assisted engineering tools.
The role sits within a software team that is actively modernising its engineering practices, including automated and AI-assisted development workflows, and continuous improvement of development processes and tooling.

What you’ll be doing
- Design, develop, test and maintain embedded software for a range of gas sensing products, primarily using modern C++ and C
- Translate mathematical specifications, signal processing concepts and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) algorithms into robust, efficient embedded software implementations
- Ensure code is appropriate for use within mission critical and safety critical high availability systems.
- Contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through implementation, verification, release and maintenance, working within an agile delivery framework that supports iterative planning, transparent progress tracking and continuous improvement.
- Translate stakeholder needs into detailed requirements and software designs, maintaining clear traceability through appropriate requirements management and work tracking tools.
- Develop and maintain PC based tooling written in Python, to aid team productivity and/or verification efforts.
- Work in a multi-disciplinary team of Scientists, Electronics Engineers, V&V Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers.
- Apply structured problem‑solving and debugging techniques to diagnose and resolve issues.
- Understand how software decisions impact hardware, system behaviour and product performance.
- Provide realistic estimates, break work into clear deliverables, contribute to sprint planning and backlog refinement, and give early visibility of risks, dependencies and trade-offs.
- Take full ownership of assigned tasks, balancing quality, risk and delivery.
- Follow established technical standards and processes whilst supporting continuous improvement.
- Participate in design reviews, provide constructive feedback, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Maintain awareness of technology trends and their selection and appropriate application.
What we’re looking for
- Strong, hands‑on coding experience in modern C++ and C within embedded environments
- Experience developing embedded software on an RTOS (e.g. ThreadX, QNX, Integrity or similar)
- Working knowledge of Python for scripting, test or tooling
- Good mathematical understanding with experience implementing firmware-based signal processing or DSP algorithms in embedded software
- Experience working to defined development standards and processes
- Confident use of modern source control, code review and change management tools
- Familiarity with code analysis tools.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with a structured and analytical approach
- Working knowledge of electronic circuits and components
- Experience of requirements specification and software design
- Able to work effectively under pressure, managing multiple tasks and changing priorities.
- Comfortable working independently when required, while contributing within a team.
Nice to have
- Exposure to functional safety and security standards (IEC 61508, IEC 62443)
- Experience with STM32 or NXP i.MX processors
- Experience of requirements management and traceability tools such as Jama, DOORS or similar.
- Experience of agile work tracking and delivery tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Helix ALM or similar
- Experience working within an agile delivery framework.
- Experience with GenAI assisted coding and tools.

Education / Qualifications:
- Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related technical / scientific / engineering subjects

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent, 38 hours per week
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (flexible start and finish times)
Salary range: £55,000 to £75,000
