About This Position
At the Austin Fleet Mobility Department, we’re proud to play a vital role in keeping our city moving forward. Under close supervision, assists Equipment Technicians with tasks involving the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motorized equipment including, trailers maintained by Fleet Services.
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Refuels and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of types of vehicles and other equipment.
Changes all type of tires and perform repairs to small tires.
Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
Initiates minor repairs and changes belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.
Transports vehicles of all types including heavy vehicles.
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
The Fleet Equipment Technician I will perform maintenance and complex repairs on various systems on a diverse fleet with different types of vehicles and equipment to include after-hours call-outs for breakdowns and repairs. The technician will maintain and repair motorized equipment, gasoline and diesel engines and maintain a variety of equipment to ensure full operating capacity during routine and emergency conditions.

Work Schedule & Location:
The schedule for this position is subject to change based on business and operational needs. Shifts may vary and can include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday hours. Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work may also be required. Fleet Mobility Services maintains various services centers located within Austin, TX. The role may be assigned to different locations, and the work schedule may include participation in a rotational on-call program. This may require the technician to return to work outside of regular hours or perform field repairs as needed.
Commercial Driver's License Requirement - CDL:
This position requires a license for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
Essential Employee Designation:
This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.
