ABOUT THE ROLE:
The General Counsel is a hands-on role at the intersection of law, compliance, and public policy. You will be the company's primary in-house legal advisor, serve as its designated Compliance Officer, own our relationships with state regulators and lottery commissions, and lead our government affairs efforts as we grow into new states and products. Jackpot.com operates primarily in the US, with a UK holding company and affiliates in Malta and Serbia. As the group's legal officer, you will oversee legal matters across all entities, working with local counsel outside the US.
Reporting to the Chief Strategy & Data Officer, you will work closely with the executive team, growth, product, marketing, finance, and operations. This role suits someone with a startup mentality who moves quickly, takes ownership, and looks for practical ways to get to yes. We also want someone who embraces AI and is excited to use it to help a lean legal team do more.
While this is a remote position, you must be located or willing to relocate to the NYC metro area to qualify.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Corporate Oversight and Governance
- Oversee corporate governance and entity management across the group (US, UK, Malta, and Serbia), including board and committee materials, statutory filings, corporate records, resolutions, and intercompany agreements, working with local counsel and corporate service providers.
- Maintain the company's licensing portfolio across all operating jurisdictions, including applications, renewals, ongoing reporting obligations, and suitability filings covering the company, its UK parent, and their directors and significant shareholders.
- As the designated Compliance Officer, build and maintain a compliance framework covering age and identity verification, geolocation, responsible gaming, AML/KYC, anti-bribery and corruption, data privacy and cross-border data transfers, and consumer protection.
- Develop and update internal policies, and lead training so teams understand and follow them.
- Manage outside counsel relationships and legal budget, ensuring high-quality work at a reasonable cost.
- Manage equity and capitalization matters, including the cap table, equity incentive plan and grants, 409A valuations, and investor rights and consents under our financing documents.
- Support corporate transactions, financings, and strategic partnerships, including due diligence.
Day-to-Day Legal Advisory
- Serve as the go-to legal partner for all internal teams, providing practical, business-minded guidance.
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including retail and distribution partnerships, vendor and SaaS agreements, marketing and affiliate agreements, NDAs, and data processing agreements.
- Review marketing, promotional, and sweepstakes materials for compliance with state lottery rules, advertising regulations, and consumer protection laws.
- Advise on product launches and feature changes, with particular attention to new verticals and jurisdiction-specific requirements.
- Own the company's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and player-facing disclosures.
- Manage disputes, player complaints escalated for legal review, and litigation with support from outside counsel.
- Advise on employment matters in the US, Malta, and Serbia, in partnership with HR and local counsel.
- Use AI tools to speed up contract review, legal research, and regulatory monitoring, and help set guidelines for responsible AI use across the company.
Government Affairs and Regulatory Relations
- Serve as the company's primary point of contact with state lottery commissions, gaming regulators, and other relevant agencies.
- Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments affecting lottery courier services, iLottery, gaming, and adjacent products, and translate them into clear business implications and recommendations.
- Develop and execute a government affairs strategy to protect existing markets and support expansion into new states.
- Represent the company in regulatory meetings, public comment processes, hearings, and industry associations.
- Build constructive, long-term relationships with regulators, legislators, and policy stakeholders.
- Manage lobbyists and government affairs consultants where engaged.
YOU HAVE:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state.
- 5+ years of legal experience, including meaningful time in-house, ideally in lottery, gaming, fintech, payments, or another highly regulated consumer industry.
- Direct experience with state-level licensing and working alongside regulators.
- Strong commercial contracting skills and the judgment to balance legal risk with business goals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-lawyers.
- A startup mentality: comfort with ambiguity, a bias toward action, and a willingness to work independently in a fast-growing company with a lean legal function.
- Enthusiasm for AI and hands-on experience using AI tools in your own legal work.
IT'S A BONUS IF YOU HAVE:
- Experience with lottery, iLottery, sports betting, iGaming, or other emerging gaming products.
- Experience in government affairs, public policy, or legislative strategy.
- Familiarity with AML/KYC, responsible gaming, and consumer data privacy frameworks, including US state privacy laws (e.g., CCPA), GDPR, and UK GDPR.
- Existing relationships with state lottery or gaming regulators.
- Experience as in-house counsel for a US business with a foreign parent or international affiliates.
- Comfort managing non-US entities and employees through local counsel.
ABOUT YOU:
- You are described to be quantitative and analytical. You have a passion for using data to answer questions and enable decision-making.
- You value accountability and easily manage multiple priorities and stakeholders to achieve business goals.
- You have a learning mindset with willingness to embrace change, and work in a startup environment.
