Who We Are

The Department of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie classified R2 institution in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education, seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Instructor who value its Mission and share its commitment to inclusive excellence and the building of a just society.  LMU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Black-Serving Institution (BSI), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), animating servingness for all persons, regardless of identity or beliefs, through its mission and Jesuit, Marymount educational traditions.

Position Responsibilities

Courses to be taught include Philosophical Inquiry, an introductory course required for all LMU students, and/or Ethics, which meets the university’s core Ethics and Justice requirement, and possibly other core courses.

We are seeking to hire dedicated teachers who will contribute to the department’s goal of helping students of all backgrounds to become critical and reflective thinkers.  Our department is at the center of a Catholic university whose mission is inspired and guided by the traditions of the Society of Jesus, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.  We therefore encourage an integration of knowledge in which “faith and reason bear witness to the unity of all truth” (Ex Corde Ecclesiae, §17).   Teaching philosophy at LMU is at its core a vocation devoted to love of the truth in all its fullness. It is a way of being a person for others, more specifically, for students, by putting oneself at their service by exemplifying the love of wisdom and thereby enkindling in them a love of all that is good, true, and beautiful.  This teaching vocation calls for a serious philosophical formation (normally satisfied by a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related discipline), demonstrated teaching excellence, and the desire to live a life of intellectual friendship with our colleagues and students in the light of the Catholic intellectual tradition. As a pluralistic department that values and respects a diverse range of philosophical approaches, we seek candidates who embrace this vision and who will contribute to the Catholic tradition of philosophical inquiry. We invite all qualified candidates in the full diversity of their being, life experience, and beliefs to apply.

How to Apply

Candidates should submit application materials via the LMU Human Resources online application portal (http://jobs.lmu.edu).  Please note that the online portal can only accept five attached files at a maximum.  Please submit the following items to the online application portal:  (1) a letter of application, which should address the candidate’s perspective on both philosophical pluralism and the Catholic intellectual tradition as they animate teaching, philosophical activity, and collegial life in a department; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a teaching statement; (4) evidence of teaching excellence, which should include at least sample syllabi and sample assignments, as well as student evaluations and teaching observation reports. Three confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address teaching, should be sent directly to LMUPhilosophy@lmu.edu.  Questions about the position should be sent to Carissa Phillips-Garrett, Search Committee Chair.  Complete applications must be received by January 8, 2027.  Pre-arranged interviews by video call will be conducted by early February 2027.
