This position is part of Novanta’s Advanced Surgery business unit. Specialized in the field of Minimally Invasive Medicine, Novanta Medical develops devices and accessories so that doctors can operate with small cuts. We produce Cameras, Insufflators, Medical Pumps, and tubing that makes diagnosis and treatment easier for everyone. Our insufflators and pump systems dilate cavities in the body and turn previously complicated surgeries into minor procedures. Together with customers, doctors, and technical experts, our teams continuously search for new ways to innovate.
As a Lead Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for software development activities, guide engineering teams on complex technical challenges, and help drive the adoption of modern AI-supported development practices.
Your Responsibilities:
- Leading software development for medical devices and guiding engineers in the implementation of software solutions
- Leading the transformation from classical software development to AI-supported software development within the team
- Requirements analysis and creation/review of software requirements and related documentation
- Ensuring compliance, traceability, and product lifecycle documentation within medical device development
- Conducting design and code reviews
- Planning and coordinating software development activities within the team
- Creation and execution of software tests and resolution of complex software issues
- Applying and further developing software standards and best practices
- Creating and maintaining technical and regulatory documentation in accordance with FDA, ISO 13485, and IEC 62304 requirements
- Providing technical leadership through mentoring, training, and knowledge sharing
- Supporting strategic and technical decision-making within the software engineering function
Additional Responsibilities:
- Driving the adoption of AI-supported software development practices, tools, and workflows
- Supporting engineers, students, and external development partners on complex technical topics
- Assessing the impact of new technologies, standards, and AI-supported development methods
- Mentoring new employees and fostering engineering excellence within the team
- Supporting hiring activities by assessing technical capabilities and leadership potential
- Providing technical input for performance evaluations and employee development
- Monitoring industry trends and representing the organization in relevant technical forums where appropriate
- Advising management on software engineering and technology-related decisions
Ideal Experience, Education and Skills:
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, or equivalent
- Experience leading software development activities for regulated medical devices and providing technical guidance to engineers
- Strong understanding of AI-supported software development approaches and practices
- Very good knowledge of software architecture, software design, and system development
- Extensive experience in embedded software development with C/C++
- Experience mentoring engineers and reviewing technical solutions
- Knowledge of software development tools and AI-supported engineering approaches
- Good verbal and written English skills (B2 or higher)
- Desirable: knowledge of electrical engineering and communication/transmission protocols
- Strong technical leadership skills and the ability to influence without direct disciplinary authority
- High willingness and capability to drive change and innovation
- Structured, quality-conscious, trustworthy, and team-oriented working style
Travel Requirements:
- Willingness to travel up to 10%
