About the team
Production Engineering builds and operates reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure platforms that support Pure Storage engineering teams across data centers and cloud environments. The team owns production-grade Kubernetes and bare-metal platforms, including cluster lifecycle management, networking, storage, observability, automation, and multi-tenancy.
Role summary
As a Kubernetes and Bare Metal Engineer at the MTS4 level, you will design, deploy, operate, and continuously improve large-scale bare-metal Kubernetes platforms used by multiple engineering organizations. You will own critical technical areas, drive reliability and security improvements, lead complex incident resolution, and influence architecture and engineering standards across Production Engineering.
This role requires strong systems expertise, production-operational judgment, automation skills, and the ability to lead ambiguous, cross-functional technical initiatives.
Key responsibilities
Platform architecture and design
- Design and evolve highly available bare-metal Kubernetes architectures, including control planes, worker nodes, rack topology, networking, and persistent storage.
- Define standards for cluster provisioning, upgrades, scaling, node replacement, and decommissioning.
- Design secure multi-tenant platforms using RBAC, OIDC/SSO, namespace isolation, quotas, limit ranges, and network policies.
- Develop technical designs that balance reliability, performance, cost, operational simplicity, and delivery timelines.
Production operations
- Deploy and operate Kubernetes clusters across development, staging, and production environments.
- Own day-two operations, including upgrades, capacity expansion, troubleshooting, patching, and lifecycle management.
- Build and maintain GitOps and CI/CD workflows using technologies such as Argo CD, Kubespray, Ansible, and internal deployment pipelines.
- Participate in follow-the-sun production on-call rotations.
- Lead complex incident response, root-cause analysis, postmortems, and long-term corrective actions.
Networking, storage, and observability
- Implement and operate Kubernetes networking using CNI technologies such as Cilium, BGP, ingress, load balancers, network policies, and multi-rack data-center topologies.
- Integrate Kubernetes with enterprise storage platforms, including Portworx and Pure Storage FlashArray or FlashBlade.
- Define and improve monitoring, logging, tracing, dashboards, alerts, and SLOs using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic, Fluent Bit, and Fluentd.
- Improve platform resilience through capacity planning, backup and restore, disaster recovery, and failure-domain-aware design.
Technical leadership and collaboration
- Serve as a subject-matter expert for bare-metal Kubernetes and related infrastructure platforms.
- Lead design reviews, write architecture documents, establish engineering standards, and drive decisions across partner teams.
- Collaborate with SRE, Security, Network Engineering, Storage, and application teams to onboard and operate production workloads.
- Mentor engineers and raise the quality of automation, documentation, runbooks, and operational practices.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Six or more years of experience in infrastructure, SRE, platform engineering, or production engineering.
- At least three years of hands-on experience operating Kubernetes in production, with significant bare-metal experience.
- Strong Linux systems administration, troubleshooting, performance-tuning, and security-hardening skills.
- Deep understanding of Kubernetes internals, including the API server, etcd, controllers, scheduler, kubelet, and workload primitives.
- Strong knowledge of Kubernetes networking, including CNI plugins, Services, Ingress, NetworkPolicies, DNS, load balancing, and TCP/IP.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation using Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent tools.
- Experience with observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic/ELK, Fluentd, or Fluent Bit.
- Proficiency in Python, Go, or another scripting/programming language for automation and platform tooling.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear design documents, runbooks, and operational procedures.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience operating KubeVirt or other virtualization platforms on Kubernetes.
- Experience with Portworx, CSI, and Pure Storage platforms.
- Experience designing multi-tenant Kubernetes platforms with OIDC/Okta, RBAC, quotas, and self-service onboarding.
- Knowledge of data-center networking, including BGP, MLAG, ECMP, spine-leaf architectures, and ToR integration.
- Experience operating OpenStack in production, including Nova, Neutron, Cinder, and Keystone.
- Experience with GitHub Actions runners or other CI/CD infrastructure on Kubernetes.
- Experience with backup, restore, disaster recovery, capacity management, and cross-data-center resiliency.
What MTS4 means in this role
At the MTS4 level, you are expected to:
- Own large, ambiguous technical problems from initial concept through design, implementation, and stable production operation.
- Act as a domain expert for bare-metal Kubernetes and influence platform roadmaps, architecture, and engineering standards.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives and make sound trade-offs across reliability, cost, security, operational risk, and delivery timelines.
- Anticipate platform risks and create durable, automated solutions rather than relying on manual workarounds.
- Raise the engineering bar through mentoring, documentation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
Why join us
You will work on foundational infrastructure that directly improves engineering productivity and supports critical workloads across Pure Storage. This is an opportunity to shape the architecture and operating model of a growing bare-metal Kubernetes platform while solving challenging problems in reliability, scale, security, automation, and resiliency.
