This is a high-impact engineering role within a global engineering environment, focused on advancing process automation and control capabilities across North American operations. You will lead the automation scope of capital projects from initial design through commissioning and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle. The role combines controls engineering, operational support, cybersecurity, and lifecycle management of automation systems. You will collaborate closely with site leadership, engineering teams, vendors, and operational stakeholders across multiple regions. Your expertise will help improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and manufacturing performance. The position offers significant exposure to complex industrial environments and opportunities to contribute to an evolving global automation strategy.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the automation and controls components of capital projects through initial design, detailed engineering, implementation, commissioning, and project closeout.
- Serve as the technical authority for automation deliverables, ensuring designs and implementations comply with applicable industry standards, engineering practices, safety requirements, and regulatory expectations.
- Champion process safety and life-critical work processes, particularly during field activities and commissioning.
- Collaborate with site leadership, engineering teams, vendors, and other stakeholders to coordinate project execution and maintain strong working relationships.
- Monitor project milestones, technical deliverables, quality requirements, safety performance, and regulatory compliance throughout project execution.
- Deliver control-system configuration and engineering services to North American operational sites.
- Provide ongoing automation support for operational facilities, including lifecycle management, cybersecurity initiatives, system improvements, and other controls-related needs.
- Support the advancement of automation capabilities and contribute to broader initiatives designed to modernize and improve process control systems.
- Provide technical guidance on control philosophies, instrumentation, manufacturing processes, and automation solutions for modern process plants.
- Participate in commissioning, troubleshooting, and other project activities requiring onsite support, including occasional international assignments.
- Travel as needed to support projects and operational requirements across North America, South America, and Asia Pacific.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Automation, Controls, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- 10+ years of professional experience in Controls Engineering, with a strong record of progressively responsible technical and project leadership.
- 10+ years of experience working within chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or similarly complex process manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated success leading control-focused engineering projects from concept and design through implementation and commissioning.
- Strong experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), such as Emerson DeltaV, ABB 800xA, Foxboro, Rockwell, or comparable platforms.
- Deep understanding of control philosophy for modern process plants, industrial automation, instrumentation, and production manufacturing processes.
- Strong knowledge of automation lifecycle management, including system configuration, operational support, modernization, and cybersecurity considerations.
- Proven ability to act as a technical authority while balancing engineering standards, project objectives, safety requirements, and operational priorities.
- Excellent leadership, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and engage teams at different organizational levels.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to manage complex technical challenges in operational environments.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 25% domestically, with some international travel required for commissioning and project-related activities.
