This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a R&D Engineer - Mass Timber Connections based in Canada.
This is an exciting opportunity for an early- to mid-career engineer to contribute to the development of innovative structural connection solutions for the growing mass timber industry. You will combine engineering analysis, applied research, hands-on experimentation, and product development. The role offers the chance to investigate structural behaviour, design and evaluate connection concepts, and translate test results into practical engineering recommendations. You will collaborate with senior engineers, laboratories, suppliers, universities, and multidisciplinary internal teams. Your work will directly support product validation, technical approvals, design guidance, and future product development. This is an ideal environment for a curious engineer who enjoys solving open-ended technical problems and taking increasing ownership of meaningful R&D projects.
Accountabilities:
- Plan and execute applied engineering research involving structural connections, fasteners, timber systems, and product performance.
- Support the development and improvement of connection products, from early-stage technical concepts through prototyping, testing, and validation.
- Perform structural calculations, analytical modelling, literature reviews, and code-based assessments to understand behaviour and develop engineering recommendations.
- Develop test plans, coordinate specimens and fixtures, support internal testing, coordinate external laboratory programs, and analyze experimental results.
- Participate in hands-on testing activities, including specimen preparation, prototype installation, test setup reviews, instrumentation support, and failure-mode observation.
- Analyze experimental data, identify trends and limitations, establish design parameters, and document defensible technical conclusions.
- Collaborate with engineers, technologists, suppliers, and fabricators to develop prototypes, fixtures, and specialized testing setups.
- Support engineering work involving relevant structural codes, standards, and approval pathways, including CSA O86, NDS, ICC-ES, CCMC, Eurocode 5, and AS/NZS.
- Take ownership of assigned R&D projects and workstreams, managing priorities, schedules, documentation, and stakeholder communication.
- Prepare technical reports, calculation packages, research summaries, test documentation, and recommendations that can be used by engineering and product teams.
- Work cross-functionally with product engineering, operations, technical services, business development, marketing, suppliers, universities, and external laboratories.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Timber Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Approximately 2–6 years of experience in structural engineering, applied research, testing, product development, or building products; candidates with exceptional relevant experience outside this range may also be considered.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or EIT status with the ability to pursue a P.Eng. designation in the near term.
- Strong understanding of structural mechanics, load paths, material behaviour, and fundamental engineering principles.
- Experience with timber engineering, structural connections, fasteners, mass timber, or building products is highly valued.
- Experience with physical testing, laboratory research, structural testing, or experimental engineering is an asset.
- Familiarity with structural design codes and standards such as CSA O86, NDS, Eurocode 5, or comparable standards.
- Experience using engineering analysis tools, spreadsheets, CAD software, or numerical modelling tools.
- Strong ability to investigate open-ended technical problems, develop hypotheses and engineering recommendations, evaluate results, and adjust approaches based on evidence.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, organization, and project-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while recognizing when technical review or collaboration is required.
- Curiosity, practical problem-solving ability, sound engineering judgment, and an interest in hands-on experimentation.
- Proficiency in English is required.
Benefits:
- Competitive salary range of $70,000–$115,000 CAD, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Remote work opportunity based in Canada, with the position associated with Surrey, British Columbia.
- Full-time position within a research and development environment focused on innovative mass timber construction solutions.
- Opportunity to work on applied research that directly influences product development, testing, technical approvals, and engineering guidance.
- Exposure to multidisciplinary projects involving engineering, product development, testing laboratories, suppliers, universities, and industry partners.
- Opportunity to develop technical expertise and progressively take ownership of R&D projects and workstreams.
- Collaborative environment where practical problem-solving, technical credibility, and continuous learning are valued.
- Direct opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation structural connection technologies used in real-world timber construction projects.
