Mō te tūranga | About the Role
The role of Red Team Engineer is to test, by executing realistic adversary simulations, how well Westpac can prevent, detect, and respond to realistic cyber attack scenarios across technology and identity environments.
This role strengthens resilience by identifying exploitable attack paths, validating control effectiveness, and helping Cyber and Technology teams turn findings into practical risk reduction.
Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?
Demonstrated hands-on experience in red teaming, adversary emulation, penetration testing, or advanced security assessment within a complex enterprise environment.
Strong technical capability across identity, networking, Windows and Linux, cloud platforms, applications, and common enterprise security controls.
Ability to analyse multi-step attack paths, identify root causes, and explain exposure in a clear, evidence-based way.
Practical scripting or automation capability using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar to adapt or create testing content safely.
Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief technical and non-technical stakeholders on findings and remedial priorities.
Ability to work calmly and responsibly within tight controls, approved scope, and high-trust enterprise environments.
Desirable
Experience in financial services, critical infrastructure, or another highly regulated New Zealand enterprise environment.
Experience working directly with blue teams, detection engineers, or security operations teams during purple team or validation exercises.
Familiarity with AI security testing, AI threat modelling, or AI-assisted adversary simulation methodologies.
Relevant certifications or equivalent experience, such as OSCP, CRTO, CRTP, GPEN, GXPN, or similar.
