At Litera, we don't just build software — we transform how the world's top law firms operate. Every day, we Raise The Bar™ for what's possible through AI, innovation, and solutions that power millions of legal professionals worldwide. If you're energized by scale, real impact, and meaningful challenges, you'll feel right at home here.
Where You'll Work
Hybrid: This is a hybrid role based in Ahmedabad with the expectation to be in office at least 3 days a week for collaboration and connection.
Why This Role Matters
As a Senior Database Engineer, you'll be the driving force behind the performance, reliability, and scalability of the databases that power Litera's SaaS platform — used daily by millions of legal professionals worldwide.
You'll partner closely with engineering, DevOps, and product teams to shape data architecture decisions that directly impact customer experience and platform uptime. This is a high-visibility role where your deep expertise across database platforms — PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MySQL — will influence how we build and scale our next generation of cloud-native solutions on Azure and AWS.
If you thrive on solving complex data challenges across multiple database engines and want your work to have real, measurable impact, this is the opportunity for you.
What You'll Deliver
- Ensure Litera's critical SaaS databases run at peak performance through expert-level tuning, monitoring, and optimization across PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and/or MySQL — directly improving platform reliability for millions of users.
- Design and implement database schemas and data ingest strategies that scale with our growing product portfolio and customer base, leveraging the strengths of each database platform.
- Drive root cause analysis during major incidents and lead cross-functional resolution efforts, minimizing customer impact and strengthening system resilience.
- Implement advanced security standards — including row-level security and data encryption — to protect sensitive legal data and maintain compliance.
- Architect backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions across Azure and AWS cloud environments that ensure business continuity and give stakeholders confidence in our platform.
- Automate routine database operations to reduce toil, increase reliability, and free up engineering capacity for higher-impact work.
- Review and improve database code across teams, mentoring engineers on best practices and elevating the quality of our data layer.
- Stay ahead of emerging database technologies and cloud-managed database services, bringing forward recommendations that keep Litera at the cutting edge.
What You'll Bring
Must-Haves
- 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator or Database Engineer, with strong foundational knowledge of database engine internals and fundamentals across PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MySQL.
- Subject Matter Expert (SME) in at least one major database platform (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or MySQL), with demonstrated deep expertise in performance tuning, architecture, and production-grade operations on that platform.
- Proven database management experience in Azure or AWS cloud environments, including managed database services (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Azure Database for PostgreSQL/MySQL, Azure SQL Managed Instance).
- Proven ability to write, debug, and optimize complex database queries and code across multiple database dialects.
- Query optimization expertise: Deep proficiency in analyzing execution plans, identifying bottlenecks, and rewriting queries for optimal performance. Ability to leverage indexing strategies, query hints, and platform-specific optimizer features across PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MySQL to ensure consistent, high-throughput database operations.
- Database migration specialist: Hands-on experience planning and executing database migrations — including cross-platform migrations (e.g., SQL Server to PostgreSQL, on-premises to cloud), major version upgrades, and schema evolution strategies — with minimal downtime and data integrity assurance. Familiarity with migration tooling such as AWS DMS, Azure Database Migration Service, pgLoader, or equivalent.
- Solid understanding of database engine tuning, partitioning strategies, and physical schema design from logical models.
- A problem-solver who can reverse-engineer issues, simplify complexity, and communicate clearly under pressure.
- Comfort with on-call rotations and the ability to maintain composure during high-urgency production incidents.
Nice-to-Haves
- Database certifications in the required platforms (e.g., PostgreSQL Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: SQL Server/Azure SQL, Oracle MySQL Certified Professional) or AWS and Azure cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Database — Specialty, AWS Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect). Strongly preferred.
- Additional cloud platform certifications (Azure, AWS) or multi-cloud database management experience.
- Experience with data modeling, master data management (MDM), or data dictionaries.
- Background working with SaaS products in highly regulated environments (SOX, HIPAA, PCI).
- Familiarity with software development practices and workflows.
- Knowledge of security and privacy compliance frameworks.
- Adaptability and a passion for learning new tools and technologies. Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as New Relic, Datadog, Grafana, or similar tools to proactively identify performance trends, anomalies, and infrastructure health across database environments.
Great candidates don't check every box — if this role excites you and you bring most of what we're looking for, we'd love to hear from you.
