Senior Software Engineer
Overview
The Emerging Payments Personal Payments Team is responsible for software development, integration, and support of key applications. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong expertise in Java, Spring, and modern distributed systems to support Mastercard Send and contribute to Mastercard 3.0. This role emphasizes scalable software design, secure coding practices, and high-performance system development within a fast-paced, Agile environment.
Role
•Deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality software solutions supporting Mastercard Send, aligning with software development and engineering best practices
•Design and implement robust software components and system interactions (software design) that meet both functional and non-functional requirements
•Contribute to defining and evolving software architecture, ensuring scalability, performance, security, and long-term maintainability
•Develop and maintain microservices-based applications using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs
•Own end-to-end development including design, build, test, deploy, and support, ensuring full lifecycle software development execution
•Participate in and contribute to unit, functional, and integration testing strategies, ensuring reliability and quality across services
•Drive performance engineering activities, including benchmarking, monitoring, and tuning applications for scalability and reliability under varying workloads
•Apply secure coding practices, ensuring protection against vulnerabilities and adherence to enterprise security standards
•Conduct and participate in code reviews, improving code quality, maintainability, and adherence to engineering standards
•Ensure systems are built with strong operability engineering principles, including observability, monitoring, and maintainability
•Leverage strong understanding of data structures and efficient algorithms to build high-performance applications
•Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across systems, ensuring stability and minimal disruption (advanced troubleshooting)
•Collaborate in Agile teams, contributing to sprint planning, design discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives
•Support deployment and release planning, including contingency and rollback strategies
All About You
•7+ years of experience in software engineering within Financial Services or enterprise environments
•Strong hands-on experience with:
o Java (primary), Scala (preferred)
o Spring Boot / Spring Framework
o RESTful API development and JSON integrations
o Microservices architecture design and implementation
•Proven experience in software design and architecture, including applying design patterns and building scalable systems
•Strong understanding of data structures and algorithm design for performance optimization
•Experience with performance engineering, including system tuning, monitoring, and scalability optimization
•Demonstrated ability to apply secure coding practices and build secure, resilient applications
•Experience designing and executing unit, functional, and integration testing, using frameworks such as JUnit
•Active participation in code reviews, with a focus on improving code quality and maintainability
•Strong experience with troubleshooting complex systems, diagnosing issues across applications, services, and infrastructure
•Familiarity with operability engineering practices, including logging (Log4j), monitoring, and production support readiness
•Additional technical strengths:
o Apache Spark for distributed data processing
o Kafka, NiFi for data streaming and workflow orchestration
o Redis for caching and performance optimization
o Oracle PL/SQL and database design
o Maven for build and dependency management
o API testing tools (e.g., Insomnia)
o Cloud platforms (PCF, Azure)
• Experience working in Agile environments with strong ownership and accountability
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
