Overview
This role is responsible for designing, deploying, testing, and maintaining the organization’s backup systems and all related components. This includes working with SAN, NAS, tape systems, local disk, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and other storage technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the subject matter expert for all backup environments.
Build and maintain backup solutions for both physical and virtual machines across Linux and Windows, using OEM and third‑party tools.
Configure and provision backups for Linux and Windows servers.
Strengthen and maintain security throughout the backup environment.
Monitor backups, resolve issues, troubleshoot failures, address performance bottlenecks, and configure alerting for proactive response.
Install, configure, test, and maintain system management tools, SAN and tape infrastructure, and server plugins, ensuring all hardware, software, firmware, and patches stay current.
Ensure high system availability by verifying data replication, failover copies, and redundant datasets.
Monitor and test application performance, identify bottlenecks, and collaborate with developers on solutions.
Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies.
Write and maintain scripts to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention (including IaaS backup monitoring).
Support the design of information and operational support systems.
Provide Tier 3 support.
Work with vendors and other IT teams to resolve issues.
Maintain thorough and up‑to‑date technical documentation, including inventory, patch levels, system configuration details, hostnames, IPs, and credentials.
Integrate systems with Linux and Windows as needed for core services.
Document system configurations such as passwords, access controls, version/revision numbers, patch levels, and hardware inventory.
Train government staff and transfer knowledge using industry best practices.
Provide real‑time reporting on backup storage usage, performance metrics, availability, and trends for tape and disk systems.
