This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer - Developer Productivity based in Canada.
As a Staff Engineer specializing in Developer Productivity, you will shape the engineering experience and technical infrastructure that enables a growing organization to build, test, and deploy software efficiently at scale. You will take ownership of the end-to-end developer experience, driving improvements across monorepo architecture, build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and testing infrastructure. Working within a high-growth B2B SaaS environment, you will help optimize the workflows used by more than 50 engineers developing a sophisticated data activation and AI-driven decisioning platform. You will identify development bottlenecks, introduce modern tooling, and establish scalable engineering practices that improve productivity and software quality. Collaborating closely with engineering leadership and product teams, you will influence technical strategy and help shape the organization's engineering culture. This is a high-impact opportunity to operate at staff level, combining deep technical expertise with organization-wide influence and ownership.
Accountabilities:
- Own and continuously improve the end-to-end developer experience across build, test, and deployment systems, ensuring engineering teams can deliver software efficiently and reliably.
- Lead the evolution, architecture, and optimization of a large JavaScript/TypeScript monorepo supporting more than 50 engineers.
- Reduce build times and continuous integration (CI) bottlenecks through advanced tooling, caching strategies, architectural improvements, and workflow optimization.
- Implement, scale, and maintain modern monorepo and build system technologies such as TurboRepo, Bazel, and Nx.
- Improve testing infrastructure, visibility, reliability, and execution speed across multiple engineering teams.
- Design scalable systems and workflows that accelerate developer iteration cycles while reducing cross-team dependencies and engineering bottlenecks.
- Establish observability and operational excellence across build, testing, and deployment pipelines, ensuring performance and reliability.
- Support multi-region and multi-cloud infrastructure powering large-scale production systems.
- Partner with product engineering teams to identify friction points, understand development challenges, and deliver solutions that improve engineering efficiency.
- Define and promote engineering-wide standards for code quality, testing practices, and software release processes.
- Drive technical initiatives that increase productivity across the organization, acting as a force multiplier for engineering teams.
- Influence architectural decisions, engineering strategy, and technical best practices while collaborating with senior engineering leadership.
Requirements:
- 8–15 years of professional experience in backend engineering, developer productivity engineering, platform engineering, or related software engineering disciplines.
- Extensive experience with developer tooling, build systems, monorepo infrastructure, or internal engineering platforms.
- Proven ability to support engineering organizations scaling from approximately 40 to more than 100 engineers.
- Deep expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript ecosystems, including modern development workflows and tooling.
- Strong understanding of systems design, software architecture, and distributed systems behavior.
- Hands-on experience optimizing CI/CD pipelines, build performance, testing infrastructure, and developer workflows.
- Practical experience implementing, maintaining, or scaling monorepo and build technologies such as TurboRepo, Bazel, or Nx.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, with a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
- Previous experience in high-growth startups or technically sophisticated engineering organizations.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify complex engineering challenges and develop scalable solutions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across multiple teams.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently, take ownership of organization-wide initiatives, and drive meaningful engineering improvements.
Nice to Have:
- Experience working at high-performing technology companies or engineering-driven organizations such as Vercel, Stripe, Databricks, Plaid, or Ironclad.
- Previous experience within developer platforms, build systems, or internal tooling teams.
- Familiarity with multi-cloud and multi-region distributed systems.
- Exposure to event-driven architectures and large-scale backend systems.
- Experience owning developer productivity initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
- Proven ability to influence engineering culture, establish technical standards, and shape long-term engineering direction.
Benefits:
- Competitive annual base salary ranging from USD 180,000 to USD 320,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Meaningful equity package offering participation in the organization's growth.
- Fully remote working arrangement, available to candidates based in Canada or the United States.
- High-ownership staff-level position with organization-wide technical impact.
- Opportunity to define and transform developer productivity practices across a rapidly scaling engineering organization.
- Direct visibility and collaboration with engineering leadership.
- Opportunity to work on high-impact infrastructure and systems used by the entire engineering organization.
- Exposure to modern technologies, large-scale distributed systems, and advanced developer tooling.
- Significant technical autonomy and influence over architectural decisions and engineering standards.
