**COMPANY OVERVIEW**
Craftwork is building a modern, technology-enabled home services company, starting with residential painting. We employ our painters full-time and manage the entire customer experience using proprietary software, which allows us to consistently deliver excellent quality and service while creating meaningful careers in the trades.
Founded in 2023, Craftwork currently operates in Charlotte and Raleigh, with plans to expand into three new markets over the next 12 months. We’ve grown to nearly 80 employees and have raised over $25M from investors including Y Combinator, Seven Seven Six, Slow Ventures, Forerunner Ventures, General Catalyst, and Lachy Groom.
**POSITION OVERVIEW**
Craftwork is looking for a Full Stack Engineer to help build the software platform that powers our next stage of growth.
Our software sits at the center of nearly every part of the business, from sales and customer communication to estimating, scheduling, field operations, and automation. As we expand into new markets, this person will help us build the products and infrastructure required to make those operations increasingly reliable, intelligent, and scalable.
A central part of this role will be building modern full-stack applications across our web and backend systems. The right person will bring deep experience with TypeScript, React, Next.js, ShadCN UI, and Node.js, and is comfortable both designing thoughtful product experiences, as well as the APIs, services and underlying systems that support them. Familiarity with Open Router, Drizzle ORM, BullMQ, Expo / React-Native, Twilio, Stripe, and Resend is also a plus.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership engineering role. You’ll work closely with Product, Design, Operations, and our customers to understand real business problems, shape solutions, and own features from initial discovery through deployment and iteration. The goal is not simply to write code, but to deeply understand and take ownership of the problems we’re solving and build thoughtful, reliable software that makes Craftwork better every day.
**OUTCOMES**
**Ship High-Quality Product Experiences**
* You’ll design and ship thoughtful, complete product experiences that solve meaningful problems for customers and employees.
* You’ll own features from initial problem definition through design, development, launch, iteration, and measurable improvement.
* You’ll sweat the details of usability, edge cases, and polish.
**Build Scalable Full-Stack Systems**
* You’ll build maintainable frontend and backend systems that can support increasing product complexity, usage, and market expansion.
* You’ll make sound technical decisions that balance speed, simplicity, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
**Elevate Platform Reliability & Performance**
* You’ll reduce bugs and performance issues across the platform through thoughtful engineering practices and proactive technical improvements.
* You’ll implement appropriate testing, monitoring, and observability so issues are identified, diagnosed, and resolved quickly.
**Raise the Engineering Quality Bar**
* You’ll write clean, thoughtful, testable code and contribute to engineering standards that improve the quality of the codebase over time.
* You’ll actively participate in code reviews, technical decisions, and knowledge sharing.
* You’ll help create a culture where quality, maintainability, and thoughtful execution are shared expectations across the engineering team.
**Improve Cross-Functional Collaboration**
* You’ll work closely with Product, Design, Operations and our customers to turn real business problems into clear, effective technical solutions.
* You’ll communicate tradeoffs, scope, and progress clearly while helping the team move from ambiguity to shipped product quickly.
**Create a Product That Gets Better Over Time**
* You’ll stay close to the people using what we build, including spending time in the field to understand how the product performs in the real world.
* You’ll proactively identify friction, opportunities, and improvements rather than treating a feature as finished once it ships.
* You’ll use customer feedback, employee feedback, product data, and direct observation to continuously improve what we build.
**COMPETENCIES**
**Zero-to-One Builder**
* You’re comfortable turning ambiguous problems into clear technical solutions.
* You’re energized by building new systems, features, and workflows from scratch.
**Technical Depth**
* You bring strong experience building modern applications across TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Node.js.
* You’re comfortable building MCP’s and agentic tools including OpenRouter, Deepgram, Claude, and ChatGPT to support your own plans to write high-quality code.
* You’re comfortable working across frontend interfaces, internal and external APIs, backend services, and data models.
* You can make sound technical decisions without over-engineering the solution.
**Product Judgement**
* You care deeply about the quality and usability of what you build.
* You can translate real user and business problems into thoughtful product experiences.
* You consider workflows, edge cases, and downstream implications when making product decisions.
**Systems Thinking**
* You understand how individual features fit into a broader product, and can consider dependencies, scalability, data flow and consequences before making decisions.
* You look for opportunities to solve root causes rather than patching symptoms.
**Quality & Reliability Mindset**
* You take pride in writing clean, maintainable code and shipping dependable software.
* You balance speed with discipline to avoid creating unnecessary technical debt.
**Cross-Functional Collaboration**
* You communicate clearly with Product, Design, Operations, and other engineers throughout the development process.
* You’re comfortable challenging assumptions, explaining technical tradeoffs, and working through disagreement constructively.
* You build trust by being dependable and accountable for the outcomes you own.
**Continuous Improvement**
* You’re naturally curious about how the product is used, you seek feedback, spend time close to users, and use what you learn to improve what we build.
* You continuously look for ways to improve the product and the way the team works.
* You’re low ego, highly accountable, and genuinely motivated by helping others succeed.
